A perennial vegetable that grows well in most of the US. Rhubarb should be planted where it will not be disturbed since it may be productive for five years or more. Plant or divide rhubarb roots in early spring while the plants are dormant. Planting seeds is not recommended. Supply a good source of vegetable fertilizer beforethe spring growth. Uses include pies, tarts and sauces. Plant in full-sun in well-drained soil. For the best harvest remove the flower stalks as they develop. The first year of planting, the stalks should not be picked, the nutrients from the leaves is needed to nourish the roots for the next year's growth. After the first year of growth one light harvest may be taken during the 2nd year of planting if the plants are healthy and vigorous. After the first 2 years of growth the entire plant can be harvested.
