Red oak leaf curl
Question
No white residue or signs of insects, rolling only on latest growth. Has not happened in the past. A small tree in our backyard does not show these conditions. What is the cause of the leaf curl?
Answer
This is the second question regarding leaf curl on Red Oaks this season and unfortunately I still don't have an answer. If there are no insects present the most likely cause is a fungal disease that affected the buds prior to opening. Peach trees commonly have similar symptoms followed by leaf drop caused by a species of Taphrina a fungal disease promoted by wet springs and spray irrigation. Fruit growers often control this disease with a single dormant fungicide spray applied in the fall after leaf drop or in the early spring before bud break. This fungicide treatment is generally not recommended for ornamental trees.
The oak leaves in your photo appear to still be green without lesions which leads be to believe they are still doing their job even thought they are curled. I would recommend keeping an eye on the tree this season, if it begins to defoliate it maybe signs of a more serious problem.
Thanks for the gardening question, we will keep looking for the answer!
