Relocating Hydrangea
Question
Large hydrangea can it be moved and when is the best time to do this?
Answer
Fall is generally the best time to relocate trees and shrubs. The cooler temperature and coming rain/moisture will reduce stress and the possibility of die back. Transplanting in the fall will also give the tree or shrub time to develop new healthy roots giving the plant a head start in the spring.
Once your hydrangea drops its leaves then go through the stems and prune out all the older stems leaving only the most recent seasons growth. Then prune the remaining stems down to the lowest developing set of buds (Around 18" from the ground, they look like match heads) this will reduce the weight and make it easier to move. Removing a good amount of the above ground portion will also reduce the amount of foliage the damaged roots will need to support in the spring. Don't worry hydrangea can handle heavy pruning.
Using a sharp shovel work all the way around the shrub several inches from the stems to define the rootball width. Next work the shovel under the rootball well below the base of the plant until its free. Take the largest rootball possible you feel you can safely move, slide a piece of burlap or tarp under to keep the rootball intact during the move.
Have the planting site prepared, once planted keep the rootball moist for the next few months.
