Canary Island Palm Tree

The Canary Island Palm has a massive thick trunk covered with interesting diamond designs left by leaves that have either fallen off or been removed. Slow growing to 100 feet however rarely seen as tall generally 30-50 feet is common in the landscape. The crown can grow up to 40 feet wide with huge arching pinnate leaves that may reach 18 feet long. Leaves are a deep green fading to a yellow stem where the leaflets are replaced by spines close into the trunk. Hardy to around 20 degrees at which point there is probable leaf damage which is slow to recover. Plant in fertile well-drained soil. Water sparingly during the winter months when the tree is not actively growing, water freely during the summer. Full to partial-sun. Use a balanced palm specific fertilizer at the recommended rates during the growing season.
