Chamaerops humilis or the European fan palm is a small clump forming variety known for its cold hardiness. Generally growing to 15 feet in height with around 2 foot long leaves with deeply divided pointed lobes. Leaf color can range from blue green to grey green to yellow green. The small, bright yellow flowers are held close to the trunk behind the leaf stems which are armed with very sharp teeth. The fruits which follow are generally a dark yellow to brown. Adaptable to most soil types with good drainage, this particular palm does not do well with soggy feet. Once established the European fan palm is very drought tolerant however with semi-regular water the tree will be more vigorous. Know to handle temperatures as low as 12 degrees.
